HERD HEALTH & WELLNESS

DEWORMING

At APHS, we recommend strategic deworming strategies that combine fecal egg counts and strategic deworming practices to help minimize parasitic resistance. It is no longer recommended to simply rotate dewormers every couple of months. Our veterinarians will discuss a proper deworming protocol for your horse depending on its lifestyle and fecal egg count results. Fecal egg counts are preformed in house at our laboratory. You can simply drop a fresh fecal sample by the clinic to have it evaluated.

WELLNESS EXAMS

An annual physical examination is important to help screen your horse for any potential health issues and is a great time to bring up any concerns. We always prefer to take a proactive approach to our patient care, as opposed to waiting until there is something wrong. Wellness exams are the first step in catching problems before they advance.

COGGINS

APHS offers digital coggins utilizing the Global Vet Link software. This enables you to have access to a digital copy of your horses coggins 24/7. No more digging through notebooks of carbon copies.

HEALTH CERTIFICATES

A health certificate, now called Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI), is issued for horses for travel across state lines for any reason (sale, show, pleasure, etc). The horse must have a current Coggins test to be issues a CVI. The CVI is good for 30 days from issue.

We also offer EECVIs (Extended Equine Certificate of Veterinary Inspection), these are good for 6 months. Simply anytime you are going to take a trip and need a CVI you log into your My Vet Link account and enter your trip information and it will generate a CVI. Note, to issue a EECVI the horses coggins must have been pulled by our clinic, however we can still issue a 30 day CVI on coggins pulled elsewhere.

VACCINES

Our vaccination guidelines are tailored to each individual horse’s needs based on lifestyle, disease prevalence and vaccine history.

Clients should understand that:

  • Vaccination alone does not prevent all diseases; vaccinations minimize the risk of infection or the severity of the infection but do not prevent disease in all circumstances

  • The primary series of vaccine and boosters should be administered prior to exposure- vaccines are not effective immediately after administration, your horse needs to build an immune response.

  • Although rare, there is potential for adverse reaction to vaccines, the nature and severity of the reaction varies from one horse to another and one vaccine to another.

Core vaccination recommendations that all horses should receive:

  • Rabies

  • West Nile

  • Eastern and Western Encephalitis

  • Tetanus

Risk based vaccination:

  • Rhinopneumonitis (Herpes)

  • Influenza

  • Strangles

  • Pneumabort (pregnant mare vaccine)
